On Wednesday, December 7th, the first meeting of the Community of Democracies Task Force for Moldova will take place at the Department of State in Washington, DC. The United States co-chairs the Moldova Task Force with Poland. Dr. Tomicah Tillemann, Secretary Clinton’s Senior Advisor for Civil Society and Emerging Democracies, and Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Jerzy Pomianowski will co-chair the inaugural meeting.
In July, leaders participating in the Vilnius Ministerial of the Community of Democracies inaugurated a new mechanism to support emerging democracies – the Democracy Partnership Challenge. The Challenge is designed to encourage and support reform in countries undergoing promising transitions to democracy. Moldova was selected to participate in the initiative based on its commitment to consolidating democratic gains, its potential for future progress, and the strength of their application.
The inaugural meeting of the Task Force will bring together representatives from fifteen countries and several leading civil society organizations to discuss mechanisms for channeling support to priority areas that have been identified by Moldova’s Government in consultation with representatives of civil society and donor organizations. These areas include: judicial reform, local government, transparency of government, security sector reform, and migration policies. Over the next two years, the Moldova Task Force will work to leverage the resources and expertise of its and partners in the Community of Democracies to facilitate progress in these sectors and support Moldova’s transition.
