Participants developed a series of recommendations to be presented to the governments of the Community of Democracies at the June 30 - July 1 Vilnius Ministerial. This meeting was held as protests in Tunisia were strengthening, which culminated in the collapse of the regime only days later and provided a new opening for the development of democracy in the MENA region.
The Ulaanbaatar Roundtable on Democracy in Asia
The Ulaanbataar Roundtable on Democracy, which occurred on September 28-30, 2010 in Ulaanbataar brought together 35 democracy activists from the region. The purpose of this roundtable was to give voice to local civil society leaders regarding democratic development in the region and to provide concrete and timely recommendations to the working groups of the CD and to the current chair, Lithuania. Discussions centered on the topics of the working groups, including: enabling & protecting civil society; gender equality; poverty, development & democracy; regional cooperation; and promoting democracy and responding to national & transnational threats to democracy. Democracy education was also a theme discussed at this meeting.
